The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All India Entrance Examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science(IIs) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs).
The GATE score of a candidate is used for admissions to various Post-Graduate Education e.g. Master of Engineering/ME, Master of Technology/M-Tech, Doctor of Philosophy/Ph.D) in Indian higher education institutes/Universities, with financial assistance provided by MHRD. Recently, GATE scores are also being used by several Indian public sector undertakings (i.e., government-owned companies) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions. It is one of the most competitive examinations in India. Some of the PSUs which use GATE score for providing jobs include BARC, BHEL, IOCL, HPCL, NTPC, Power Grid, NHPC etc. GATE exam primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidate in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering.
- The GATE score reflects the relative performance level in a particular branch. GATE score is valid for three years.

Question Paper Pattern & Mark Distribution
All the papers of GATE will be conducted by an ONLINE computer Based Test (CBT). The GATE paper consists of questions of both multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For numerical answer type questions, the candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual key board. The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hour duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
DISTRIBUTION OF MARKS:
Test pattern for the three hour GATE exam is - 65 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) aggregating to a total of 100 marks:
- 10 Questions based on General Aptitude questions carry a total of 15 marks (5 Qs of 1mark each + 5 Qs of 2 marks each)
- Remaining 55 questions are based on the syllabus mentioned in the respective paper codes. Each question carries either 1 mark or 2 marks
Given below is a detailed and systematic description of the GATE question paper for all paper codes except GG, XE and XL which have minor changes in the paper pattern.
Flow Of Questions
|
Negative Marks for Wrong Answer
